(See pic) Review #1044. Local grocer that have the amazingly priced crabs and lobster, frogs and salmon, among other fish and pork. The prices are the same as in Chinatown, Richmond, Irving and even Mission, despite the fact that there are very few options in the neighborhood. This is why I enjoy shopping here so much. Pretty much you can pick up all the cooking ingredients, vegetables, fruits and even Asian fresh deep fried noodles (birthday ones, chow mein, etc.) Service is always very nice and fast.

Most of you are not going to go out of your way into this corner of the Sunset to get some good ol' fashioned Chinese greens like - A tsai / A choy - bitter melon - xien tsai (yeen choy - the thick stem with the purple dye in the leaf) - yoh tsai (yau choy, the ones with flowers taste a tad bit sweeter but your mileage may vary) - gai lan - long stem or short stem bok choy - Si Gua (silkie melon or loofah squash) but should you find yourself needing them and are in the area, then JL Foods is the "best" market nearby. I've picked up a few of these at random over the past 6 to 8 months on various weekends, and found them to be in superior quality (and cheaper) than what I can get at the Peninsula A$N supermarkets. This is quite possibly the freshest A-choy I've picked in a while, right from here. Wash em at least 5 times, cut them into 3 to 4 portions (for a better mouthful), oil, garlic, then stir fry until done (and a little salt towards the end). hmmmm mmmm good. And to think in Taiwan, they used to feed A-choy only to the ducks! "A" literally means "duck" in Fujian Taiwanese dialect (it's "Ya" in Mandarin for duck.) Don't bother with the market across the street from JL, that looks like a freakin warzone on the outside, and just as bad as some parts of Chinatown on the inside (where the store smells of butchery and dead fishery). Plus very little in the way of produce (people go there more so for the meats and fish, which might be a better choice at JL anyway). For better fruit, my munnay goes to the various A$N markets on Irving near the 20s. So come here for the greens. Maybe the live fish (they have a series of tanks in the back, but watch out, floor gets wet and slippery). But definitely the A-choy / A-tsai when in abundance, is good sheeyaht. Quack quack! Ya Ya mon!
